Under The Bridge Pilot

Bluetonic & Nottingham C.A.N have teamed up to secure National lottery Funding to create the ‘Under the Bridge’ project

Three local community organisations, passionate about supporting their local community have partnered together to form a new project – ‘Under the Bridge’ Project.
Exploring positive mental health impacts of spending time in blue spaces, alongside water-based sports activities and music, the project will bring together ‘target groups’ promoting togetherness, strengthening support circles, developing confidence and exploring creativity.

Through a series of workshops, events and group activity (Starting in April 2022), the ‘Under the Bridge’ project will bring together a network of local males to take part in a program of outdoor activities around Blue Spaces and engage in new experiences and learning together. Blue Spaces are areas that are close to water either inland or by the sea. There are many beautiful Blue Spaces – Lakes, Reservoirs, Canals and Rivers.

Spending time by Blue Spaces on our doorstep can make us happier and healthier. Participants will understand how just visiting Blue Spaces on a regular basis increase life expectancy. They will learn how to use maximise the benefits of being in blue spaces by using mindfulness activities. All this will be delivered in a way that will empower participants to teach others the importance of coming together, learning and connecting in, on and around water.

Participants will learn new skills while connecting to their local environment through activities such as fishing, photography, poetry. They will also be able to try activities promoting the value of being active such as paddle boarding, wake boarding and swimming at Spring Lakes Open Water Park.

– To properly give voice to the participants taking part in the project, we will also feature musical workshops where our group will form a Choir, learning and rehearsing a number of songs with a professional Choir leader. Continuing our love for being around the Blue waters, we will jump aboard a Boat and take to the River Trent for the debut performance of the ‘Under the Bridge’ Choir. Not only do the Blue Spaces down our Rivers bring visual beauty, but also our Riverways provide us with some incredible sounding outisde concert venues for us to showcase our Choir.

As the project runs it will be documented by a film crew and a study will be carried out by Nottingham University to assess the impact. The hope is that this will inspire the participants to continue as a choir at the end of the project. Also that it inspires other people to be active in blue spaces improving their health and well being.

The last few years have been extremely tough for everyone. But together our numbers equal strength. If you or anyone you know or work with are looking to expand social and/or support circles, or even just looking for something new to do. Sign up to the ‘Under the Bridge’ Project, Starting in April 2022.
